The Apprenticeship in Hospitality, Scotland programme is open to young people aged 17-24 and was created in 2014 by the Gleneagles Hotel, Blythswood Square Hotel, Apex Hotels, Cameron House Hotel on Loch Lomond and The Torridon Hotel.
Having grown each year we are now partnered with The Old Course Hotel, St Andrews, The Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa, Edinburgh, The Carnegie Club at Skibo Castle, The Lovat on Loch Ness, the Westerwood Hotel, Kingsmills Hotel, Inverness, Trump Turnberry, a Luxury Collection Resort and Crieff Hydro Hotel.
The Apprenticeship in Hospitality’s aim is nurture, develop and inspire the next generation of highly skilled talent for the Scottish hospitality industry.
This two year course offers a route to gaining qualifications alongside practical experience in some of Scotland’s leading hotels with an optional third year to advance your skills in the department of your choice.
The Apprenticeship in Hospitality, Scotland (AHS) is open to 17-24 year olds and is underpinned by the Modern Apprenticeship Hospitality framework where, on completion, apprentices will be award a Level 2 in Hospitality Services through four different areas in the hotel; Housekeeping, Food and Beverage Service, Kitchens and Reception.
For the third year of the course apprentices, in discussion with their employer and the training provider will make a choice as to what qualification best suits their needs and stage of development. They will also select a department, from the four they have already worked in, to be their focus and will remain in the that department for the following 12 months whilst undertaking their third year qualification.
Prospective apprentices should apply via the ‘Application Form’ form then select the hotel you are interested in applying to where they will be subject to the recruitment and selection process of the chosen hotel. When successful, all apprentices are the inducted into the Apprenticeship in Hospitality course in October of each year.
What makes this course unique is that each apprentice takes part in masterclasses and learning journeys offered only to this course. There are normally two masterclasses per department and one learning journey per year.
A series of master classes throughout years 1 and 2 provide the apprentices with focussed sessions led by experts across a number of topics, and give the apprentices the opportunity to get together as a group.
Learning Journeys / HIT Scotland Scholarship
The Apprenticeship in Hospitality, Scotland recognises the success of the apprentices by providing high value, rewarding, learning experiences. At the end of year one, through our partnership with the Hospitality Industry Trust Scotland and Diageo Learning for Life, each apprentice will be taken on a hosted trip to London where they are given access some exclusive venues and national buildings to learn about the operations behind the scenes and to meet the managers and operators, hearing their success stories.
In addition, upon successfully completing the first two years of the Apprenticeship in Hospitality, Scotland each apprentice will be awarded a further scholarship opportunity from DIAGEO Learning for Life and HIT Scotland. In 2016, the apprentice were sent to Italy on an educational wine trip to Bottega Winery. The group spent two days in Italy hosted by the Bottega Winery learning all about the picking and production of prosecco, had a tutored tasting and a beautiful lunch paired with different wines.
In year 3, whilst working in the apprentices preferred department, they will collectively come together for a series of business masterclasses building their supervisory and management skills for their future careers.
