I started on the Scottish apprenticeship in hospitality late 2014 as one of the first 10 apprentices and I am proud to say that I am still here, growing more eager day by day to learn more and more about hospitality and I climb higher up the hospitality industry. I believe I couldn’t be doing this without the help of the apprenticeship, it has truly helped me throughout my short time already in the industry. I am forever thankful for the opportunity I have been given and always looks for new and exciting stuff I can learn.
When I first started my apprenticeship I began in housekeeping, this wasn’t an area I wanted to hold my career in but I knew I had to complete this section to move forward! I’m so glad I stuck it out and passed as I believe now looking back on it, it played a very important role in helping me today as I am aware of how the department works and how they operate up there, I always look up to housekeepers as I know now how hard a job it is a need not only a lot of physical strength but also mental.
After finishing in housekeeping I was looking forward to my next journey on the apprenticeship which was food and beverage! I was lucky enough to get a place in our bar! I was so excited I always wanted to work in the bar and now has my chance to shine. I seemed to pick it up quite quickly and was really enjoying myself. I started mostly on days which suited me fine after a few months I started doing more night shifts and got also the pleasure of working functions for up to 300 people, this was a great experience and one I will not forget, 6 months passed quickly.
The time was here – RECEPTION! I was ecstatic to start. I have only been there just over 2 months and for me it has been the best 2 months yet of my apprenticeship I go into work every day with the mindset to learn and do the best I can, I have learnt so much in such a short space of time. I also got awarded with employee of the month with only being in the department 2 months to me that is amazing and I am so proud of myself , getting this award has been a goal of mines when I first joined the apprenticeship and I am happy to say that I achieved it through my own hard work. I’m looking forward to the future and can’t wait to climb higher in hospitality.
I am forever thankful for the opportunities I am given through the Scottish apprenticeship in hospitality and am always looking for ways to expand my knowledge. From the trips to London to days in the laundry I am extremely grateful! I do not believe I would be where I am today without the help of Scottish apprenticeship in hospitality and Apex hotels.
