9 young budding hoteliers – the first participants in a newly launched Scottish Apprenticeship in Hospitality – have undertaken a Laundry masterclass as part of a three – year programme run by some of the UK’s top hotels.
The Scottish Apprenticeship in Hospitality (SAH), launched at the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, is an industry led initiative which provides world class on-the-job training across all aspects of the modern hotel industry for young people committed to a future career within the Hospitality industry. The Apex Laundry Masterclass is the latest in series of speciality topics which forms part of the participants learning journey.
The apprenticeship is designed to raise standards across Scotland’s hospitality sector and to support the apprentices through specially tailored vocational training.
SAH is an industry led partnership between The Gleneagles Hotel, Cameron House Hotel, the Townhouse Collection and Apex Hotels and Diageo Learning for Life – as well as training partners Skills Development Scotland, Training Matters and the Hospitality Industry Trust Scotland.
Apex Hotels opened its own laundry facility, the venue for the Master class, in Livingston just outside Edinburgh, in 2013, with the laundry now servicing all of its Scottish properties.
The apprentices received a presentation from Andrew Taylor – Apex Facilities Director about operational aspects of the facilities and a full tour where they learned about the equipment, as well as meeting with employees and getting some “hands on” experience.
Robert Allan, Apex Hotels HR Director said: “The Scottish Apprenticeship in Hospitality covers a wide range of topics. A modern efficient laundry is a critical part of any hotel operation so we have made it a key part of our unique and wide ranging hospitality apprenticeship. The participants have seen at close quarters a first class facility and have widened their knowledge of the laundry process – helping them to appreciate the logistics and work that goes on behind the scenes to deliver crisp linen amongst other essential items.”
Future masterclasses include Cocktail Mixology, Diageo Bar Academy and Discovering Distilleries.
